“That smells like old socks!” “No, it smells like a man, man!”

Hit or flop? A little cosmetic image adjustment or a completely new brand strategy? For the sweeping discussion alone, the Old Spice-campaign “Smell like a man, man” already deserves an advertising award. Brief summary:

Wieden + Kennedy were charged with improving the dusty image of the Old Spice brand, which lay (or lies) somewhere between “that smells like my grandpa” and “I’d buy it if I wanted the fragrance of 1977.” Professional actor Isaiah Mustafa stands before the camera in just a bath towel and adeptly makes it clear to his female audience that in all probability their boyfriend may not look much like him, but could at least smell like him. What a pompous little…

The video was circulated rapidly, mostly because it is charming, funny and unusual. But that was not enough. The spread of the film clip was followed closely by thousands of tweets, whether from ordinary users or the major personalities of the Twitter community. Actors, musicians and multipliers sprang upon the Old Spice ad and especially on Isaiah himself. Obviously, the agency could have responded via Twitter, but instead chose an equally unusual route.

Isaiah again stands before the camera in the bathroom set to individually answer the tweets of the Twitter celebrities. This is the actual highlight of the campaign for us. In total 185 videos were personally produced, for celebrities like Alyssa Milano, Demi Moore and Ellen DeGeneres, but also for internet heavyweights such as Guy Kawasaki. Naturally, they were all flattered by the special attention and so shared the personalized videos in their own social networks. Thanks to Isaiah’s intelligent and witty answers, these videos also spread like wildfire.

The videos were played almost 7 million times in the first week. To date, the response videos have clocked up around 50 million views in total. In addition, their Twitter follower count increased by 2700% and currently stands at just over 100,000. The interaction on their Facebook interest page has increased by 800% and it tripled the traffic on the Old Spice website. (Source: Adweek).

Despite this stunning communications success, a controversial discussion immediately broke out: Can a campaign like this actually achieve what it intended; an increase in sales? At first the rumor went around that sales had now completely collapsed. However, the latest figures show the opposite is the case. Yes, the campaign did increase sales. In the first six months since the start of the campaign, sales of Old Spice rose by 27% compared to the same period the previous year; last month it increased by 107%.

We congratulate the agency for this extraordinary achievement and look forward to further inspiring cases like this.

public link gets out and about

Last Friday we celebrated our annual agency outing day. The tension was high, because the majority of colleagues had no idea where the journey would bring them. First port of call – the new dry toboggan run in Petersdorf – had most of the participants screaming like joyful children. The clouds of wasps that attacked us later also evoked some hysterical screams. But the dry toboggan ride was great fun! See for yourself:

The journey went on to Bad Saarow, where we initially enjoyed a relaxing picnic by the lake. At the subsequent raft building session we learned the hundreds (it felt like) of different ways to make knots, so that we could later see if our two teams could build rafts that float from the material given. Thereafter, we could actually convince ourselves of our efforts on the water with a raft race between the teams.

The delicious meal at the Park Café with a superb view of Lake Scharmützel provided the crowning conclusion to our day out.

Thanks for this beautiful day, public link, and thanks to the masters of ceremony!

We are Popkomm

Once more Popkomm is upon us! And we are heavily involved with it this time around. From now on it is up to us at public link to tell the world they should visit Berlin between September 8 and 11, 2010, at the grounds of the former Tempelhof airport. We are supporting the Popkomm project team with all the music PR experience we have gathered.

This year Popkomm takes place under the umbrella of the Berlin Music Week. From September 6 to 12 numerous events are taking place with a music theme. This includes the Berlin Festival, with which Popkomm cooperates. And that is good for everyone, because holders of a Popkomm ticket can gain entry to the Berlin Festival and festival visitors can also visit Popkomm on September 10, the day it is open to the public. The location of the festival is likewise the former airport grounds at Tempelhof.

As well as a B2B market place for the international music industry itself, Popkomm will also offer a market area for consumers. This is open to all music fans and music lovers between September 8 and 10, 2010, at the entrance hall of the former Tempelhof airport. And the best thing about it: visitors to the B2C market place need not pay for entrance. Businesses connected to music, media partners and labels have here a chance to present their products and services in entire. In addition, an exciting and varied support program includes acoustic showcases and competitions, meets & greets, autograph opportunities, live transmission of music broadcasts, information events, pre-listening sessions, etc. As well, at the Popkomm Showcase Festival September 8-10 more than 60 newcomer bands drawn from the whole world will play in some 10 locations around the airport.

So, block all other appointments and be there! You can find all the red-hot news, info and initiatives in Facebook or at: http://www.popkomm.de

To whet your appetite there is a video of the last Popkomm event, held in 2008. Have fun!
